Ron wins Adult Learners Week Award!
Wanstead House volunteer Ron Filer has won an award at the recent
Redbridge Institute Adult Learners Week Ceremony. (nominated by tutor Anna Bisset)
While attending an art class at Wanstead House, Ron was running
one art group at his church on a voluntary basis and now is running 3 including one at the Corner House for Age Concern. When the building and its renovation became the subject of a Community Art Project, Ron's clear enthusiasm for the Project helped to motivate the whole group and the subsequent artwork involving around 40 students became a valuable part of the opening celebrations of the Corner House. He has also been a key member of the team in two other community art projects.
Ron is a prolific artist , always producing new work and trying new techniques, a mine of information on art and always willing to help and support others. As such, he is a great role model for any artist as well as students looking to extend their skills and horizons

Pat Marriott, who is studying art at Wanstead House, recently had one of her paintings published by the Wanstead Village Directory to illustrate an article about Age Concern. The work was part of a project, organised by Pat’s tutor Anna Bisset based around the Cornerhouse building.
The editor of the Wanstead Village Directory spotted Pat’s painting here, on the Wanstead House website and thought it would be an ideal illustration for the article, as Age Concern use the Corner House building for one of their centres.

Another ‘Inspired by William Morris’ Success
Thea Green, a student at Redbridge Institute of Adult Education, who attends classes at Wanstead House is a ceramic artist and painter based in Woodford, and recently featured in an exciting show of contemporary art at the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow. This specialist gallery for the Arts and Crafts celebrated Morris’ work with an exhibition of contemporary artists work from all over London entitled ‘Inspired by William Morris’. Artists were invited to create a new piece of work in any medium using a piece of work from the gallery as inspiration. The resulting works were shown in the gallery amongst the works which inspired them. This proved to be a fascinating and overwhelmingly popular show with attendance at the private view numbering several hundred and showed how William Morris is still an artist who has much to interest artists, designers and students today.
Thea’s piece, ‘Fruit Stone’, is made in burnished ceramic and used the Fruit Wallpaper as inspiration. It is in the form of a hollow stone and the colours represent the fruit, leaves and branches of the wallpaper in an abstract design. Fruit stone has been placed in a cabinet with other ceramic pieces from the gallery, including William de Morgan’s.
Thea said “It was an enormous privilege to have my work shown alongside such historic artists and also with such exciting contemporary work.
She is currently developing her painting skills with a class in watercolours at Wanstead House. More of her ceramics were also seen in her recent exhibition at Wanstead Library.
Thea said “It was an enormous privilege to have my work shown alongside such historic artists and also with such exciting contemporary work".
The exhibition is then open to the public from Thursday 12th May to Friday 10th June 2011. Please email Edwin Aitken - the Head of Art and Design at school (eaitken@chigwell-school.org) to make an appointment if you would like to view the exhibition .
Students of Redbridge Institute attending art classes at Wanstead House are showing artwork at the Chigwell School Charity Exhibition, alongside local artists and pupils in the School Art Centre, in aid of the Chigwell Riding Trust. The show includes work from Wanstead House by Ron Filer, Naomi Fenton, Pat Marriot, David Boland , Frank Landsell and tutor Anna Bisset.
Anna said "It's a great opportunity for students to show their work and to see what sort of work is being produced by other artists in the community."

As well as work from Redbridge Institute, there was also work from members of the Essex Art Club, who meet at Wanstead House. This group includes professional artists such as John Tookey and Peter Luscombe, who was also showing, as well as former students of RIAE such as Gwen Crowe, who studied water-colours last year. Carol Adams, another former student, had two pieces of work showing, both of which have been sold already! There were some other interesting pieces, such as a water-colour by John Leyton of the Greenhouse at Copped Hall which has echoes of Eric Ravillious, the wonderful war artist

A thriller.
All the world loves a villain and Peter certainly is one. Only his wife knows the amoral and ruthless side of his nature, and she isn't really sure about it. Suspend moral judgement for a while and you'll half-believe he can get away with murder - and half want him to!
Performances commence on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8pm. There is also a Saturday matinee which commences at 3pm. The box office opens 30 minutes before each performance.
