Ron wins Adult Learners Week Award!
Wanstead House volunteer Ron Filer has won an award at the recent
Redbridge Institute Adult Learners Week Ceremony. (nominated by tutor Anna Bisset)
While attending an art class at Wanstead House, Ron was running
one art group at his church on a voluntary basis and now is running 3 including one at the Corner House for Age Concern. When the building and its renovation became the subject of a Community Art Project, Ron's clear enthusiasm for the Project helped to motivate the whole group and the subsequent artwork involving around 40 students became a valuable part of the opening celebrations of the Corner House. He has also been a key member of the team in two other community art projects.
Ron is a prolific artist , always producing new work and trying new techniques, a mine of information on art and always willing to help and support others. As such, he is a great role model for any artist as well as students looking to extend their skills and horizons

Life Drawing classes starting soon . More details here

Adult education art classes and groups are participating in the first Wanstead Art Trail, being held from Sunday 19th September until the end of Sunday 26th.
More than 150 local artists will be displaying work at the event which will be shown in shops, community centres (including Wanstead House), buildings of historical interest, restaurants, cafés, pubs and many other businesses in and around Wanstead High Street and Nightingale Lane. Main venues include Wanstead Golf Club (in Overton Drive) and The Temple, in Wanstead Park, formerly the site of one of the grandest houses in this country. The work being displayed will include paintings, photographs, mosaics, ceramics, stained glass, jewellery and sculpture.
People from across the borough are invited to enjoy the event, which is being launched on the same day as the one-day Wanstead Festival.
There will be about 65 venues taking part, all within easy walking distance of each other. There are even free guided walks from the high street to Wanstead Park on trail weekend days. For full details see the free maps, that will be available from September 1, and will be distributed at the trail. The maps have been sponsored by the Redbridge Institute of Adult Education (RIAE).
Prepare to be surprised by the work on display. Some of the artists taking part have exhibited internationally. But there is one particular name among the lists of professional and keen amateur participants that is sure to catch the eye – JMW Turner, one of Britain s greatest artists. Learn about his connection to Wanstead, and on the trail see a copy of his local drawing from 1789-90, provided by Tate Britain.
The event was founded by volunteers to provide somewhere for local artists to show their work and help create a more vibrant artistic community. As local community group the Wanstead Society has been aiming to boost the high street, it has supported the project. Local schools will be showing their work at Wanstead Library (throughout September) and at Christ Church, Wanstead Place. Two organisations for adults with learning difficulties will show Arts in the Garden at the Cherry Tree Cafe in Woodbine Place.
A variety of art classes and clubs are held at Wanstead House Community Association (including RIAE courses). For more information see this site or to www.redbridge-iae.ac.uk Essex Art Club, which has members from all over the county, also meets at Wanstead House.
Open hours for Wanstead House during the trail:
Sunday 19th September: 11am-5pm. Monday-Friday: 9am-10pm. Saturday 25th September, 9am-6pm.
Other venues are generally open all day, most days. See the Art Trail map for details.
